SARAJEVO, October 23 (FENA) - The interactive online event "Shaping Our Future Together" was held today in Sarajevo to mark United Nations Day (UN) and the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN.

Successful leaders of innovation in various sectors of society development in BiH, together with the UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald, discussed the implementation of sustainable development goals in the everyday life of BiH society and presented interesting life stories.

According to UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald, successful young people from BiH shared their experiences, views and opinions on the topic "what kind of common future do we want".

“This is a broader discussion that we have been conducting for about a year, and everything is happening as part of the 75th anniversary of the UN, an organization that was formed in San Francisco after the horrors of World War II, where countries gathered to secure the future on the principles of peace, prosperity and human rights. These are exactly the principles we have been working on for the past 75 years,” Macdonald said.

She emphasizes that the UN received about 1,400 opinions on this topic in the global discussion from BiH, and that some of the wishes for the future are better health, improved education, ending conflicts on the global stage, the possibility of better employment, eliminating corruption, higher gender equality rate, better ways to combat climate change and the inevitable crisis that follows, and ultimately fight the coronavirus pandemic.

She said that we are all tired of the whole situation with the coronavirus pandemic, but she points out that the coronavirus "has not finished with us yet".

"Recovery after a pandemic brings us new opportunities and a chance to recover that will be fairer, cleaner, greener and more inclusive," Macdonald concluded.

Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Šefik Džaferović, addressed the participants of the event via video message, saying that the coronavirus pandemic reminded humanity of how vulnerable it is, regardless of its economic, scientific, technological and other powers.

“Virus does not recognize the boundaries of race or religion and threatens all people equally. We can only fight the pandemic together, and the UN is a mechanism for that joint action,” said Džaferović.

Through this event, i.e. the presentation of inspiring life experiences of successful BiH entrepreneurs, artists, IT experts and others, the UN in BiH wants to present to the general public the contribution of BiH citizens in shaping a common sustainable future.

BiH Foreign Minister Bisera Turković opened the event.

BiH will join European cities on Saturday (October 24th) in the "Europe turns Blue to mark UN75" initiative, with the Sarajevo City Hall, the Old Bridge in Mostar and the Banski Dvor in Banja Luka illuminated in blue, marking the UN Day.
