UDIK urges the construction of a memorial for victims of war crime at Kazani

SARAJEVO, October 25 (FENA) - A group of citizens gathered today in front of the Eternal Flame in Sarajevo to pay tribute and lay flowers to those killed at Kazani location during the past war.

The Association for Social Research and Communication (UDIK) once again called on the authorities in Sarajevo to build a memorial to commemorate the victims of the wartime killings at Kazani in the city center.

The memorial should be an example of self-critical confrontation with their own crimes, as well as an example of the moral obligation of the citizens of Sarajevo to pay tribute to their fellow citizens killed at Kazani.

“Such memorial would symbolically show that Sarajevo, which has suffered the longest siege of the city and experienced the most brutal killings of civilians during the siege, is ready to condemn the crime in its own ranks and begin a process of public constructive confrontation with the past. This would make it clear that there is no 'but' in Sarajevo,” it was emphasized from UDIK.

BiH historian, professor at the University of Sarajevo Husnija Kamberović, also took part in today's tribute, telling reporters that a memorial in Sarajevo for the victims killed at Kazani would be a message that this city wants to show a willingness to face that dark side of our past.

As he emphasized, Sarajevo has nothing to be ashamed of because 'during the siege, Sarajevo fought an honorable fight'.

"The army conducted honest liberation operations. The fact that a group that committed crimes appeared within the Army of RBiH does not mean that it was the concept and strategy of that army. We can remove that stain from the Army of RBiH by showing that we were not all the same," Kamberović said in a statement for the press.

The UDIK reminds that during the siege of the city in 1992 and 1993, members of the Army of RBiH under the leadership of Mušan Topalović Caco brutally killed citizens of the capital of BiH. For this crime, 14 former soldiers of the Army of RBiH were sentenced to ten months to six years in prison. Topalović was killed while trying to escape in 1993, after being arrested in an operation by police and military forces organized by the then RBiH Presidency, the RBiH MoI and the RBiH Army.
