'Mini Schengen' to become a part of Berlin Process under the auspices of EU

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 29 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković stated that the "Mini Schengen" initiative is becoming part of the Berlin process under the auspices of the EU.

"In order to use this chance for the development of the BiH economy in the future and the improvement of mutual cooperation in the region, and removing the present dilemmas and doubts, I would like to emphasize that the recent meetings held within the Berlin Process have brought a new dimension in the relations between the region and the EU.

As part of the preparations carried out by the participating countries on the occasion of the forthcoming Berlin Process Summit, the adoption of the Draft Declaration on the Common Regional Market (CRM) is being considered, which in practice should mean that the 'Mini Schengen' initiative will be incorporated into the CRM, and thus become an integral part of the Berlin Process," said Turković.

Turković considers it important that the European Union has a plan, through the Berlin Process, to accept this idea as its own, which, she says, should provide additional confidence in this initiative, and ultimately bring numerous benefits to countries in the region and speed up the fulfillment of EU accession obligations.

"Considering that the forthcoming Berlin Process Summit in Sofia envisages the adoption of this declaration (CRM) by all participants, the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated that the BiH Council of Ministers prepare a proposal regarding this declaration (CRM) and submit it to the BiH Presidency for consideration and adoption.

After the Presidency adopts the CRM declaration, BiH could join this initiative at the Summit on November 10 in Sofia," Turković pointed out.

Turković commented on the matter bearing in mind the different interpretations that could be heard in public regarding the "Mini Schengen" initiative, and the expressed views ranging from unreserved support to suspicion and concern, stated the BiH Foreign Ministry.
