SARAJEVO, October 30 (FENA) - Members of the Council of National Minorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina held a meeting in Brčko with representatives of the Association of National Minorities of the Brčko District of BiH, and discussed the activities of the two bodies and modalities and ways to improve future cooperation, announced the PR Office of the BiH Parliament.
The adoption of the Law on the Protection of the Rights of Members of National Minorities of the Brčko District of BiH was jointly welcomed, as well as the engagement of the Principal Deputy High Representative in BiH and Supervisor for the Brčko District of BiH, Ambassador Michael Scanlan, in the adoption of that Law for which reason, on Wednesday, at a special ceremony, Ambassador Scanlan was presented with a letter of thanks from the Council of National Minorities of BiH.
Chairman of the Council, Andrija Svatok, expressed satisfaction with the adoption of the Law on Protection of the Rights of National Minorities of the Brčko District of BiH, and stressed that this Law represents a major step forward when it comes to the rights and position of national minorities, not only on the territory of the Brčko District of BiH but also on the territory of the entire state. Such legal solutions and the application of all their provisions, as he said, are the only way of equal inclusion of members of national minorities in the life of communities, and open the possibility of their adequate representation in local councils and all other levels of government in BiH.
They also talked about the upcoming local elections, and jointly stressed the importance of candidacy and participation of representatives of national minorities in order to contribute to a better position of persons belonging to national minorities in local communities. In this regard, as stated, the Council of National Minorities of BiH, together with representatives of associations of national minorities in BiH, and in cooperation with the Council of Europe, conducts activities on stronger involvement of representatives of national minorities in the election process in BiH, in accordance with applicable international conventions in this area.
