SARAJEVO, October 30 (FENA) - There are 7.1 percent of women in the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina today, from soldiers to brigadiers, who participate in military missions around the world together with their colleagues, it was underlined today at the 20th anniversary of Security Council Resolution UN 1325 "Women, Peace and Security", organized by the Ministry of Defense of BiH and the British Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The UNSCR 1325 promotes gender equality, improving the status and greater representation of women in defense and security institutions and organizations, as well as defining best methods for achieving gender equality in armed forces structures, and promoting gender equality in international peacekeeping operations.
The BiH Minister of Defense Sifet Podžić says that there are rare situations when people in BiH can boast with taking over and realizing international obligations.
"BiH is even a leader in the region and we rank very high on a global level. This is a topic that is very important because we send our people on missions in crisis areas and we have adjusted our documents to the Resolution," Podžić pointed out and added that this resolution should have been adopted before the conflict in BiH, because fewer women would have endured torture and atrocities in the war.
The British Ambassador to BiH, Matthew Field, believes that many positive steps have been taken around the world since the adoption of this resolution.
"We are especially proud of the strong partnership on this important issue," the Ambassador pointed out and announced that the United Kingdom would continue to provide support to the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of BiH.
The Chief of the Joint Staff of the AF BiH, Colonel General Senad Mašović, reminded that in 2019, for the first time in Europe, the conference "Women, Peace and Security" was organized by the AF BiH.
"We try to have an adequate policy that aims to create a better standard of gender equality. But we have a lot of obligations ahead of us and we must show our ultimate commitment to the implementation of this Resolution," he pointed out.
EUFOR Commander in BiH Major General Reinhard Trischak stressed the importance of improving the role of women and their presence in the armed forces.
"BiH is among the first countries to develop and implement the Action Pan, and that is why I pay tribute to you," he pointed out.
The Commander of the NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo, Brigadier General William J. Edwards, expressed his pride that the NATO Headquarters Sarajevo is an active participant in the implementation of that resolution in the AF BiH.
"I believe that women are leaders and the best ambassadors of the Resolution. Having more women in high positions and decision-making positions should be one of our goals," concluded General Edwards.
