Izetbegović refuses to participate in a meeting organized by Russian ambassador

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 22 (FENA) - President of the Party of Democratic Action Bakir Izetbegović refused to participate in a meeting marking the 25th anniversary of the initialling of the Dayton Accords organized by Russia's ambassador to the United Nations because the invitation was not sent to the BiH Presidency.

Namely, at the initiative of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzy, an online meeting was planned on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which was to be attended by the presidents of the leading parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The wrong choice of participants from BiH is worrying due to bypassing and ignoring BiH institutions and elected representatives in those institutions,” it is stated in the letter that Izetbegović sent to the Russian ambassador to the UN.

He reminded of similar meetings that the presidents of Croatia and Serbia tried to organize with the presidents of the parties, bypassing and ignoring the Presidency of BiH.

Izetbegović warns that the violation of these competencies can have very negative implications for the overall implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement and that some damage from such meetings outweighs the benefits. Therefore, I believe that when UN institutions invite representatives of the people and citizens of BiH, they should not do so through an asymmetric and selective formula, ignoring the integrity of BiH institutions.

He warns that there are almost no more Croats in the RS entity, and Bosniaks are being denied the right to speak Bosnian. The representation of Bosniaks and Croats, who together according to the last census together make up 16.5 percent of the population, in the institutions of this entity is minimal, only three percent.

He added that this is possible due to anomalies within the Dayton Peace Agreement, i.e. blockade mechanisms that enable ethnic divisions, which have not been removed to this day, despite numerous attempts of reforms.

“A huge problem in BiH is the persistent selection of all citizens to "three nations", despite the fact that there is a "fourth nation", i.e. a large number of citizens who, in the context of political activity, do not put ethnic identity first. This is confirmed by the fact that, collectively, the largest number of MPs in the BiH Parliament have political options that are not declared ethnic, but their influence is significantly reduced through the dominance of house od peoples over houses of representatives,” wrote the SDA president.
