FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, November 30 (FENA) - Minister of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sifet Podžić chaired a ministerial meeting of members of the US-Adriatic Charter (A5) held today via a video-communication platform.

The video meeting of this regional initiative, chaired by Bosnia and Herzegovina this year, was attended by representatives of the BiH Ministry of Defense, defense ministers of Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Northern Macedonia, representatives of the United States Ministry of Defense and Kosovo as observers.

The topics of the meeting were - Lessons learned in the fight against the Covid-19 virus, Challenges, and opportunities after the pandemic, and in the second session, the topics were Crisis Management and the Importance of NATO Partnership and Euro-Atlantic Integration in addressing current security challenges.

Minister Podžić pointed out that this forum showed that regional defense cooperation and progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration, despite the pandemic, can continue and even be strengthened.

"We certainly recognize the role of the Republic of Albania, the Republic of Croatia, Montenegro and the Republic of Northern Macedonia, together with the United States, as NATO members, to continue the process of promoting NATO's open-door policy, thus supporting the aspirations of other countries and regions towards NATO membership. In that sense, I will take this opportunity to congratulate the Republic of Northern Macedonia on the status of a full NATO member," said Podžić.

At the same time, he especially welcomed the representatives of the US Department of Defense, and, as the chairman of the meeting, expressed gratitude for the friendship and support for common individual and common strategic goals.

In addition to Minister Podžić, other ministers of defense and high representatives of the member states of the American-Adriatic Charter also had their presentations on all topics.

During the discussion, Minister Podžić, among other things, presented the views of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the given topics, while speaking about crisis management and security challenges, he said that Bosnia and Herzegovina and NATO are currently achieving very good cooperation, in accordance with the adopted document "BiH Reform Program".

"Given that NATO has recognized these challenges, the partnership is important for BiH because it enables participation in joint exercises, missions and reaching NATO standards in staff training, in accordance with available resources and procurement of equipment. Crisis management in these times is a very big challenge," underlined Minister Podžić.

He also stated that the current security challenges are characteristic of BiH, which are reflected from the global level, in addition to the danger of the spread of infection, terrorism, extremism, migration, cybersecurity, and hybrid warfare.

"Corruption and organized crime are also threats, but they are not necessarily related to global trends," Podžić emphasized.

After a discussion after both sessions, which was attended by all Defense Ministers and representatives of the US Department of Defense, a Joint Statement was adopted, which reflects the views and commitments expressed at today's meeting.

Finally, Minister Podžić thanked the United States for its continued interest, guidance, assistance, and support in advancing US-Adriatic cooperation, and used the opportunity to express support for the Republic of Croatia, which is taking over the role of chairing the US-Adriatic Charter in 2021.

The US-Adriatic Charter was initiated by Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, and the United States to help aspiring countries join NATO.

The Adriatic Charter is a strategic partnership among the members of this initiative that recognizes common aspirations such as strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations between members and other countries in the region, with the aim of achieving security and full integration into European and transatlantic political, economic, security and defense institutions.
