The plaque with the name of convicted war criminal Karadžić taken down today

FENA Press release

PALE, December 10 (FENA) - The plaque with the name of convicted war criminal Radovan Karadžić at the entrance to the Student Center in Pale was taken down today.

The taking down of the plaque came after Sonja Karadžić Jovičević, Radovan Karadžić's daughter, state at a news conference in Banja Luka that it was high time "to stop using the name of her father," and that a plaque with his name on the wall of the Student Center in Pale should be taken down.

She added that it was unbelievable that "after five years from the unveiling of the plaque, there are still controversies about it."

"It is politically naive and short-sighted to believe that this plaque is the real reason for all these political events, it is just means to an end. I hope that the removal of the plaque will put an end to further misuses of the name of my father and my family," said Karadžić Jovičević.

She stated that "all these years, her family and her father have been under sanctions, even though the trial ended a long time ago. She added that the SDS was not spared either, despite the fact that Radovan Karadžić had been expelled from its membership a long time ago."

The plaque with the name of convicted war criminal Radovan Karadžić was removed from the entrance to the student cen in Pale near Sarajevo, nearly five years after it was unveiled.

A photo made by N1 in Pale, on Thursday, shows the plaque was missing on the building's wall, where it was originally put.

This comes days after the UN Security Council members condemned the glorification of war criminals in Bosnia and Herzegovina and after International Community’s envoy, Valentin Inzko, called for changes to the lw that would precede the removal of the plaque.

The dormitory was officially opened on March 20, 2016, by Milorad Dodik who was then the prime minister of the entity of Republika Srpska.

The student center was named after Karadžić, who was sentenced in the first-instance verdict before the Hague Tribunal to 40 years in prison, for genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On March 20, 2019, Karadžić was sentenced to life in prison.
