FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 14 (FENA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Čović held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Sarajevo last night.

The meeting discussed the current political situation in BiH and the EU and NATO path of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the 25th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement. They also discussed economic co-operation and bilateral relations, as well as the situation regarding the coronavirus epidemic.

According to Čović's office, he briefed the minister on the political situation, emphasizing changes to the BiH Election Law as an imperative and guarantor of a bright future, and saying that political dialogue cannot function without legitimate representatives and consensus.

He also pointed out that the Croat people and their legitimate representatives are fully committed to the future of BiH in the European Union and NATO. He said that the work on building a European BiH has no alternative and that the legitimate representatives of the Croats are leading the policy of European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

“In light of the 25th anniversary of the Dayton Accords, officials emphasized a mutual commitment to preserving peace and stability in BiH. The importance of protecting the constitutional order was emphasized, which will contribute to the long-term stabilization of internal conditions and ensure socio-economic and integration progress. Particularly important was the fact that the three constituent peoples must be absolutely equal and that the rights of the constituent peoples must not be denied,” it was announced.

In the talks on bilateral relations, the commitment of the Russian Federation, which is a member of the Peace Implementation Council, to the internal stabilization of BiH and the long-term development of BiH as a modern European society was reiterated.

Finally, officials commented on the state of the coronavirus in BiH. On that occasion, Čović emphasized his satisfaction with international solidarity, as well as his gratitude for the help that the Russian Federation provided to BiH for overcoming the coronavirus as soon as possible.

In addition to Čović and Lavrov, the meeting was also attended by BiH Deputy Foreign Minister Josip Brkić and Russian Ambassador to BiH Petr Ivantsov.
