Magazinović requests that Serbia returns art work, BiH national treasure

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 18 (FENA) - Member of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH Saša Magazinović sent a letter to the institutions of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, as well as to the Presidency of BiH and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH, regarding the work of art that is currently located in Serbia and in the meantime has been declared a national treasure of Serbia.

In a letter to Serbian institutions, Magazinović states that the general public knows that Novi Sad has been declared the European Capital of Culture in 2021.

“This is the largest project awarded by the European Commission in Brussels in 2016 for a city outside the EU, for which I sincerely congratulate you. The information that the Government of the Republic of Serbia declared this event a cultural project of national importance speaks for itself,” he wrote.

However, he adds, the reason for his address is to warn them of the circumstances that can significantly affect this cultural project, the image of Novi Sad and the Republic of Serbia in the European Union and the world, but also good neighborly relations between the two countries.

“The mentioned work is presented as a cultural asset of the Republic of Serbia and, above all, the City of Novi Sad. The above data states that the Author is Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Novi Sad. The basic data on the mentioned work of art state the Institution: Cultural Center and other data regarding the mentioned painting. I hereby wish to inform you that on the basis of the documentation at my disposal, which was provided to me by the Center against Art Smuggling, it is evident that this is a work of art which is a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. For your information, this work is "Magdalena", owned by Damirka and Enver Mulabdić, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the same work of art has been declared a National Monument by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Based on the documentation owned by the Mulabdić family, which was submitted to me by the Center against Art Smuggling, there is relevant information as well as photographs that speak of the unquestionable ownership of this work of art. The theft/disappearance of this, as well as the other three works from the art collection of Damirka and Envera Mulabdić, were reported to the competent agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Works from this collection can also be found in The database of missing art. In February 2018, Interpol announced a search for the mentioned work of art, as well as others from the collection,” Magazinović said.

According to the available information, he points out, these are works that are illegally found and exhibited on the territory of the Republic of Serbia and Novi Sad. The video and other materials from the opening of the exhibitions in the National Museum Zrenjanin, the Gallery of the Hall of the Serbian Army, as well as the exhibitions organized by the Cultural Center Novi Sad and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Novi Sad speak in favor of that. All these exhibitions also feature works from the collection of Damirka and Envera Mulabdić, which enjoy the status of a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and for which Interpol has launched a search.

In a letter to the Presidency of BiH and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he supported their action to investigate the case of the icon given by the Chairman of the Presidency Milorad Dodik to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the request of Ukraine, and that it was right to draw their attention which ended up outside the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina in various, very possibly illegal ways.
