COVID-19 pandemic had limited impact on BiH capital market in 2020

SARAJEVO, December 29 (FENA) - As of December 28, the total turnover realized on the Sarajevo Stock Exchange (SASE) in 2020 amounted to 540,665,684.13 KM. Compared to 2019, this represents an increase of 25.47 percent, SASE Executive Director Almir Mirica told FENA.

If we compare 2020 with 2018, when the turnover amounted to 288.196 million KM, the percentage increase is 87.60 percent.

“If we observe the price movement on the stock market, expressed through stock exchange index, we come to the conclusion that three indexes ended 2020 with a positive performance, and two with a negative one,” said Mirica.

Mirica says that negative performance was recorded in SASX-10, which monitors the movement of the 10 largest companies in the domestic market measured by market capitalization and frequency of trade. The SASX-10 lost 4.05 percent of its value in 2020. Also negative annual performance was recorded with SASX-BBI, of 3.59 percent.

“From all the above, it can be concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic had a limited impact on domestic capital markets, at least in 2020. The reason for this is simple: the companies from the real economy that are most affected by the effects of the pandemic - tourism, hospitality, car rental agencies and the like - are mostly not joint stock companies whose shares are traded on the domestic stock market,” Mirica concluded in an interview with FENA.
