Vaccines should be priority for BiH Council of Ministers and other institutions

SARAJEVO, January 5 (FENA) - The Joint Committee on Human Rights supported, at today's session, the parliamentary initiative of the Deputy Speaker of the BiH PA House of Representatives Denis Zvizdić, which requests from the BiH Council of Ministers to start negotiations on direct procurement of vaccines for the most endangered categories of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In this way, the Joint Committee on Human Rights supported the intention of the proponents of the initiative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a state, to find an alternative way to procure vaccines, given that "the COVAX instrument, in which 172 countries participate, has not yet begun to yield expected results."

“In this sense, the commitment is that we should follow the example of countries in the region such as Serbia, Albania and North Macedonia that participate in COVAX, paid and ordered their doses, but at the same time found an alternative way to get vaccines in one of two ways, bilateral agreements with other countries that have a larger number of vaccines at their disposal or direct negotiations with vaccine manufacturers and distributors that have received approval,” Zvizdić emphasized.

According to him, that is why we have a situation where the countries of the region have already started vaccinating risk groups, and Bosnia and Herzegovina currently does not have a single vaccinated citizen.

“This issue should be a priority for the Council of Ministers of BiH and other competent institutions, because as a country we are in fourth place in terms of coronavirus mortality, looking proportionally in terms of population (ahead of us are only San Marino, Belgium and Slovenia),” Zvizdić explained at today's session of the Joint Committee on Human Rights.

Denis Zvizdić's initiative, which seeks an alternative way of procuring vaccines for high-risk categories of the BiH population, refers to some of the three types of vaccines approved by the European Union.
