Jović: BiH is different from other countries, but exceptionality is normal

SARAJEVO, January 17 (FENA) - Professor at the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb Dejan Jović believes that the 'exceptionality' of Bosnia and Herzegovina is being used to justify in a way why the same rules and governing models that exist in a less complex countries and ‘allegedly’ less divided states cannot be applied onto BiH.

He spoke today at a regular session of the Association of Independent Intellectuals "Circle 99", which was held in an online format on the topic "Is Bosnia and Herzegovina an exception - and if so, what are the consequences?".

Jović claims that the term that BiH is a special case is often used even when it is done in good faith, as in cases when it is emphasized that BiH should join the European Union as soon as possible.

He believes that BiH is quite different from other countries, but that many other countries are special in their own way and that each country that wants to build an identity is specific. Exceptionality is normal, he stressed, adding that this should not be a reason for exclusion or special treatment of individual countries.

"Whether BiH will get out of the 'status quo' depends not only on the citizens but also on the attitudes of the international community, which the handover of sovereignty into the hands of the citizens of BiH primarily depends upon," he said.

He also believes that no dialogue has been established between Sarajevo and Zagreb and that ties are weaker than they should be.
