Ivanić expects the role of the PIC to be strengthened with Biden taking over

SARAJEVO, January 19 (FENA) - The newly elected US President Joe Biden will have several priorities in his work, the first of which will be stabilizing the situation and trying to build unity in the United States because it is obvious that the country is facing tensions and internal breakdowns, said in an interview with FENA former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mladen Ivanić.

As Ivanić noted, the second priority in his work will be a different role of the US in the world compared to what it was in the previous four years, and he believes that with the new US administration, that country will be more present on the global level.

"I assume that in that sense, there will be a strengthening of ties between the European Union and the United States since the administration of the previous President Donald Trump was the one that created tensions," reminds Ivanić.

He does not believe that the Balkan region will be among Biden's high priorities as there are more critical spots in the world and places where tensions are present, but bearing in mind that Biden is a man who knows the Balkans, he expressed confidence that the US will be more present in BiH than before.

Therefore, Ivanić does not expect any dramatic changes in the US engagement, but that a stronger US presence in BiH will be most reflected in the work of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC).

"The PIC should gain more importance and I guess that in that sense a change can be expected, also much more on the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement than on the attempt to reach a new agreement on BiH because I think that, due to domestic and international circumstances, it would not be realistic to expect that," believes Ivanić.

He concluded that the PIC should be a key mechanism or instrument through which Biden's administration will try to be more present in BiH, but he does not see that anything could change dramatically in terms of the existing relations.
