MOSTAR, January 19 (FENA) - BiH Deputy Foreign Minister Josip Brkić said that the inauguration of the new president of the United States of America, Joe Biden, is indeed taking place in an unexpected environment, unprecedented in recent history.
“Fifty states within the United States are in a high degree of readiness. We are witnessing high iron fences, police officers and the National Guard, so only this environment says that the priority of the new American president will be to heal wounds within the obviously deeply divided society in the USA. I believe that the focus of his work as a responsible politician will be just that,” Brkić said in a statement for FENA.
On the other hand, in order to make a significant shift in the foreign policy sense, Brkić believes that it takes some time because it is necessary to organize the administration that will deal with it.
Asked whether the Balkans will be among the high priorities of the new US president, Brkić answered that it is possible and certain that the new US administration will deal with the Western Balkans with greater intensity, but from the eyes and perspective of Washington in the context of political stability, economic development and security stability.
“Washington's basic partner is Brussels, i.e. the European Union, and I personally expect that this synergy of relations, which were not identical in the past period, will be at a slightly higher level of understanding between Brussels and Washington, because as I said, Washington expects that at the Western Balkans, "closed garden of the European Union", Brussels will be the one to take more responsibility, and Washington will traditionally follow it,” Brkić stated.
He added that in the context of the Western Balkans, especially BiH, he expects the United States to be more engaged within the North Atlantic integrations, i.e. NATO, "and to be mutually active there, and the United States to be the standard-bearer of the alliance's expansion”.
Brkić points out that the thesis is also that the new administration will deal with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the context of a new possible constitutional order, a new internal political system in BiH, but he is convinced that no move will be made without EU partners, as well as that this move will not be made if there is no internal consensus, primarily of all three constituent peoples, i.e. their political representatives.
“I do not think that at least in the foreseeable future, through 2021, BiH as such will be at the top of the list of priorities of the new administration, but that the Western Balkans, and thus BiH will be a greater focus of interest of the new administration, that is for sure,” Brkić concluded in a statement for FENA.
