Building small HPPs on Buna River channels would be a crime against nature

MOSTAR, January 25 (FENA) - Eco association "Majski cvijet" (May Flower) set up an info booth in Mostar on Monday to educate citizens about the problem of the construction of mini-hydropower plants on the Buna River channels near Mostar.

According to the president of the May Flower organization, Oliver Arapović, throughout the day, the volunteers will inform the citizens of Mostar about procedural omissions and irregularities in the process of issuing permits for the construction of two mini-hydropower plants.

"We are here today to express our discontent and point out to the authorities that we will not give up, we will fight to the end. We will press the authorities to reconsider the awarded concession as the investor does not give up. We will persist in our demands and we will not allow anything to be built on the Buna River," said Arapović.

He added that the Buna River is a protected landscape under the law and that nothing should be built in that area.

"We will be monitoring everything that is happening. The investor needs to do a new study. We will appeal for a public hearing where we will present our remarks and facts that we have and that we are still collecting. We will also launch an initiative against the HNC Government to annul the concession because it was passed unlawfully anyway," Arapović pointed out.

According to him, the construction of mini-hydropower plants on the Buna River channels would be a crime against nature.

"To destroy that beautiful landscape that is priceless and give it to one individual to manage it - it would be absurd. We would lose certain species of flora and fauna since 21 endangered species have been registered in that area, all of which would be in danger of becoming extinct," said the president of the May Flower association.
