Izetbegović: Čović's letter to OHR and OSCE is unfounded

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 14 (FENA) - President of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Bakir Izetbegović reacted yesterday to a letter from HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović to OHR and OSCE, saying Čović's letter is "full of unfounded and insulting claims and thesis".

“Mostar is a city whose beauty we are proud of, but also a city with difficult past, strong emotions, intertwined identities and destinies, a meeting place of religions, cultures, ideologies. It is a city of Bosniaks, Croats, Serbs, but also a city of those who are simply citizens. All of them must feel comfortable and free in Mostar in the future, all of them together should manage the capital of Herzegovina,” said Izetbegović.

He said that the picture of three doctors, a Croat, Serb and Bosniak, who went to visit a sick colleague from the City Council together and brought her to sign a document on taking over the council mandate, may be pathetic for some, but it is actually a picture of what Mostar should be and what can be achieved in this city - to jointly treat the inherited condition, with the best intentions, and with the willingness of the people of Mostar to help each other.

“In line with this, there is a proposal to divide the mayoral mandate between the candidates of the three winning blocs - the Coalition for Mostar, the BH bloc and the HDZ, so that each of them spends 15 months as the mayor of the City,” Izetbegović points out.

He states that, unfortunately, such a proposal was rejected by the HDZ, and that the president of that party sent a letter to OHR and OSCE requesting intervention that would make the agreement impossible.

He reminds that for the previous 12 years, the mayor of Mostar was a member of the HDZ BiH and Mostar was called the "Croat capital city", thus indisputably violating laws, general ethical and political principles.

In his opinion, the process of electing the mayor of Mostar should be completed on Monday, February 15, when Zlatko Guzin or Mario Kordić will be elected in accordance with the Law and the Statute.

He underlined that the election process and illegal activities mentioned by Čović could be jeopardized only by his will, i.e. by the realization of the threat in his letter to OHR and OSCE that "further blockades and complete dysfunction of the city administration" would follow.

“If this really happens, if after the blockade of the formation of the Government of the Federation of BiH, blockade of the formation of the Government of the HNC, blockade of the Constitutional Court of the Federation of BiH, HDZ starts the blockade of the implementation of election results in Mostar, OHR and OSCE intervention is necessary. It is time for the representatives of the international community to start reacting, to stop tolerating unconstitutional and illegal blockades. And when it comes to Mostar, it is time for those who are for harmony and reconciliation, for progress, those that want to build, not to tear down bridges to elect such a mayor to the people of Mostar,” Izetbegović stated yesterday in reaction to a letter from HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović to the OHR and the OSCE.
