Citizens of Travnik to choose between two candidates in early elections in April

FENA

TRAVNIK, February 25 (FENA) - In the early elections for mayor of Travnik, which will be held on April 11, citizens will be able to vote between the candidate of the coalition "Our Travnik Story" Haris Kaniža and the candidate of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Kenan Dautović.

The SDA Municipal Board President Tahir Lendo told reporters on Thursday that the party fulfilled an earlier promise and offered its best candidate - Kenan Dautović, a retired brigadier general of the BiH Armed Forces and a lecturer at the Faculty of Political Science in Sarajevo.

"I am glad that we got a top candidate among the 20 or so proposed, which will be at disposal to all citizens of the municipality of Travnik. He is a man with excellent references who has made a great contribution both in the Armed Forces of BiH and in the civil sector," said Lendo.

The coalition made up of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of BiH, People and Justice Party and Our Party, has nominated lawyer Haris Kaniža for the mayor.

Kaniža was also the mayoral candidate in the elections held on November 15, when he won 3,177 votes.

As he said, in the new election he will represent "a coalition of parties of civic proliferation that want to offer better and more organized local self-government".

"We want to offer more civil society and more social democracy. We have gathered our strengths, rejected vanities and are going to win," Kaniža told reporters.

The Municipal Board of the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ) BiH has decided to boycott the early elections. The party expects the outcome of the appeal against the decision of the Court of BiH, which rejected the appeal of the HDZ BiH against the decision to repeat the election for the mayor of Travnik.

"The decision not to participate was neither easy nor simple. However, it is evident that there is a problem in the Central Election Commission (CEC) of BiH, which is not up to the task. We hope that the Constitutional Court will declare the decisions of the CEC and the Court unlawful and that they will return the process to an initial state," said the President of the Municipal Board of the HDZ BiH Bojan Domić.

The decision of the BiH CEC to repeat the mayoral elections in Travnik and schedule them for April 11, was made after the SDA candidate Mirsad Peco passed away on the day of the local elections, November 15.

The late Mirsad Peco received the majority votes in Travnik, followed by the HDZ BiH candidate Goran Pejaković.

The BiH Election Law does not specify how to act in such situations when a winning candidate passes on the day of the election.

The position of the HDZ BiH is that the mandate of the mayor should have been assigned to the second-placed candidate, while the SDA advocated that the elections for the mayor should be repeated.
