SARAJEVO, March 5 (FENA) - The delegation of Caritas Europa and Caritas Austria is of the opinion that Europe must not leave Bosnia and Herzegovina without concrete assistance, but help it solve the migrant crisis.

At the press conference, the President of Caritas Europa and Caritas Austria, Msgr. Michael Landau expressed sympathy for the migrants that he met today in camps in the Bihać area.

“It is bearable during the day and when the weather is nice, but the nights are cold. It is difficult to see people in such conditions, without proper clothes. Europe must do everything possible to prevent such images from recurring next winter. It must show solidarity and react immediately,” he said.

He noted that the local authorities, international and charity organizations are working hard to help migrants and that he will bring with him the impression that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country where its inhabitants have a hard time living, they are in a difficult situation.

"Apart from the need when it comes to migrants, we also need structural support from the European Union," he said.

Silvia Sinibaldi, Director of Humanitarian Affairs at Caritas Europa, points out that the humanitarian crisis requires an adequate response, which implies the availability of help to people in need.

“We will have to plan projects and activities in the medium term that will provide the basic needs of migrants but will not cause additional problems to the local community,” she stressed.

The President of Caritas BiH, Archbishop Vinko Cardinal Puljić, and the Director of Caritas BiH, Msgr. Tomo Knežević presented gifts to guests who are staying in Bosnia and Herzegovina to get acquainted with the situation on the ground, which, as they said, is much better than the reports they receive about it in the office. The help of Caritas Europa and Caritas Austria is continuous and they are in constant contact with colleagues from Caritas in BiH, who, along with domestic institutions and international organizations, helps in various ways.

According to Caritas BiH and official data, there are about 10,000 migrants and asylum seekers in BiH. These are mostly young people and a small number of families with children.
