BH journalists urge for adoption of Convention against Violence in the Workplace

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 8 (FENA) - The Association of BH Journalists and the Independent Trade Union of Forestry, Wood and Paper Processing of Bosnia and Herzegovina submitted a request to the BiH Presidency, the BiH Parliamentary Assembly and the BiH Council of Ministers today to ratify the No. 190 Convention on Eliminating Violence and Harassment in the World of Work, and the accompanying Recommendation No. 206, adopted by the International Labor Organization in 2019.

With this activity, the BH Journalists' association wants to draw attention to gender-based violence in BiH society, especially in the field of labor, as well as the obligation of government institutions in BiH to ratify the Convention on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work, and the accompanying Recommendation No. 206, which calls for more comprehensive protection of workers, said the BH Journalists association.

The Convention, known as ILO 190, protects all workers and other persons considered to be employees under national law and practice, regardless of their contractual relationship or employment status. This includes protection from gender-based violence and persons with the status of trainees, workers who have completed employment, who are volunteering, or job seekers, etc.

According to statistics from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), almost 65 percent of women media workers have experienced intimidation, threats or abuse in connection with their work, whether online or in the workplace, and more than 48 percent of female journalists claim to have faced gender-based violence while at work.

General research shows that 48 percent of women in BiH have experienced some form of violence since the age of fifteeen.

The Convention obliges the state of BiH to ratify the Convention in order to create an integrated and gender-sensitive approach to the prevention and elimination of violence and harassment in the workplace.

In January 2020, the European Council adopted a Decision authorizing member states to ratify ILO Convention 190 in the interest of the European Union, which the International Labor Organization forwarded to the competent European institutions and organizations.

The BH Journalists association points out that ratification of the ILO 190 Convention would be an important step for BiH on the path to EU integration, as well as improving the protection of women's human rights in the workplace, especially workers who are additionally exposed to victimization due to their profession.
