SARAJEVO, March 17 (FENA) - Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Serbia Bisera Turković and Nikola Selaković discussed today numerous issues that burden the relations between the two countries, such as the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Drina River and court proceedings against BiH citizens Husein Mujanović and Osman Osmanović.

Mujanović and Osmanović were arrested on the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia and are in prison in Belgrade on suspicion of having committed war crimes.

Minister Turković confirmed that these court proceedings were discussed at today's meeting, as well as the issue of construction of a hydroelectric power plant, noting that only the state can conclude interstate agreements, and added that diplomatic communication was underway regarding these open issues.

On the other hand, Minister Selaković called for such issues not to be politicized and he thinks that when it comes to the construction of a hydroelectric power plant, everyone needs to keep in mind that projects that mean progress should be in the mutual interest.

Turković said BiH is committed to strengthening good neighborly relations, economic and cultural cooperation and building infrastructure such as the Sarajevo-Belgrade motorway, as well as revitalizing the railways to better connect the two neighboring countries and the region.

Identifying the issues that need to be addressed, such as the issue of interstate borders, and BiH has appointed a new commission to address these issues, which is why Minister Turković expects to intensify work on it.

Selaković emphasized that the stability of BiH is important for Serbia and reiterated that Serbia respects the territorial integrity and structure of government in BiH, and this visit, he added, is a confirmation of the country's commitment to political dialogue.

He referred to the so-called "mini Schengen" initiative, assessing that the economy can be the best link between countries that have numerous problems from the past and whose solution needs to be addressed.

The two ministers agree that the COVAX mechanism has failed, both countries have paid for coronavirus vaccines in advance, but they have not received anything from that mechanism. Therefore, Minister Selaković thinks that this is a great opportunity to unite the region and tell the European Commission that these are countries that are on a thorny European path that requires a lot of sacrifices and changes, but they are inhabited by people who also need to have the right to health and everything that can contribute to health protection.

The foreign ministers underlined that Serbia is in the third place when it comes to foreign trade with BiH, although the deficit on the side of BiH has been reduced in the last five years, foreign trade in the year of the pandemic was at the level of 1.74 billion euros.
