Preliminary procedure against BiH for exceeding the emission of dangerous gases

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 18 (FENA) - The Energy Community Secretariat has informed Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia and Kosovo of the initiation of a preliminary procedure for resolving the case of exceeding the maximum emissions defined in the National Emission Reduction Plan (NERP).

NERP is a ten-year plan for defining the reduction of emissions of hazardous gases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, as well as dust for large furnaces, which has been applied in BiH since 2018. The document defines the maximum values of annual emissions at the state level.

Majda Ibraković from the Center for the Environment stated that such a procedure is not surprising, considering that Bosnia and Herzegovina constantly violates the rules, as well as its own laws regarding polluting emissions from large plants.

“We hope that this could be the first concrete step towards sanctioning criminals and reducing the negative effects of large polluters, especially thermal power plants in BiH,” said Ibraković.

By sending an open letter, the Secretariat of the Energy Community allowed these countries to react to the identified non-compliance with the law and give their conclusions so that it is possible to determine the whole background of the case, the Center for the Environment said.
