SARAJEVO, March 25 (FENA) - After the first delivery of coronavirus vaccines through the COVAX mechanism arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Head of the European Union Delegation to BiH Johann Sattler said that, although there were delays in delivery, BiH is the second country in the Western Balkans to receive vaccines through the mechanism established by the European Union.
He said that COVAX would not exist without a series of donations, primarily from the European Commission and EU member states, such as Germany and others, which jointly provided more than 2.2 billion euros, which was spent on research and guarantees, and thus ensuring the price of vaccines.
“This pandemic has taken its toll and the arrival of vaccines is a glimmer of hope and is crucial for the beginning of the recovery process, and at the same time we are witnessing that other countries in the region that have already started vaccination process record a large number of infected. That is why it is important to continue to respect all proper epidemiological measures and to ensure coordination within BiH between different levels of government,” Sattler added.
He underlined that in this difficult period, the international community stands by BiH and will continue to provide support, whether it is the procurement of necessary medical equipment, support to the private sector or vaccination of the population, because no one is safe until everyone is safe.
He announced that an agreement on grants for the first deliveries of vaccines with the BiH authorities should be signed soon, which are expected in early April.
Despite the news about a stricter regime for the export of vaccines from the European Union, this will not affect the COVAX mechanism or donations intended for BiH, concluded Sattler.
