SDA responds to Russian Embassy: BiH's integration path has been determined

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 25 (FENA) - The Party of Democratic Action (SDA), in response to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in BiH, states that they have received their document and a press release regarding the integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina into the NATO.

According to the SDA, it is clear from the content of the statement that for the sake of relations between BiH and the Russian Federation, it is necessary to clarify a number of doubts and wrong assumptions contained in the document and the statement.

The SDA emphasizes that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a friendly country of the Russian Federation, and it does not and does not intend to question that friendship in any way. At the same time, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a sovereign country, and, like the Russian Federation, intends to choose its own path, based on the will of its citizens represented by their representatives in the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, the SDA added.

"In your document you stated that "the Party of Democratic Action does not represent the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina." Of course not, we do not imagine it to be so, our deputies make up less than a quarter of the House of Representatives of the BiH Parliament. We note that the Law on Defense of BiH, which determined the integration path of BiH towards NATO membership, went through both houses of the BiH PA, with a procedure that includes entity voting in the House of Representatives, and the consent of representatives of all three peoples in the House of Peoples. Therefore, that represents the will of the entity of Republika Srpska, as well as the will of the Serbs as one of the constituent peoples of BiH," the SDA states.

Similarly, this was the case with the decisions of the three-member Presidency of BiH, the one from 2009, but also from 2019, which traced and confirmed the relationship between BiH and NATO. Some politicians in BiH have reportedly changed their minds in the meantime, but the processes related to BiH's strategic goals can only be stopped by changing laws and current strategies, not by changing politicians' opinions on a daily basis. For now, the SDA notes, no one has proposed such changes to the BiH Parliamentary Assembly.

"No one in Bosnia and Herzegovina would ever participate in an alliance that is a threat to the people of Russia, and we do not see any historical fact for which you perceive NATO as an "armed armada directed against Russia"!? Also, we don't know where you got the idea that by joining NATO, Bosnia and Herzegovina undertakes the obligation to "send its young people to distant parts of the planet to die for other people's geopolitical goals"? added the SDA.

They emphasize that NATO is a defense alliance, not an aggressor alliance, in which each country retains sovereignty in decision-making in the engagement of its own military forces.

"We do not understand what kind of "expansion" of NATO you are talking about when it comes to BiH, why it is a "hostile step towards Russia", and how BiH can become a "state on the front line". The Russian Federation has long shared the border with the countries that are members of the NATO which are located between BiH and Russia," the SDA states.

The SDA underlines that Bosnia and Herzegovina is thousands of kilometers away from those borders.

"You ask, "who is Bosnia and Herzegovina afraid of?" and "is NATO a mental hospital for treating fears and phobias?". Bosnia and Herzegovina is not afraid of anyone, which it has proved by defending itself against a much stronger aggressor a few decades ago. But we want to prevent the possibility of new conflicts in the Balkans, because the countries that carried out the aggression on BiH are rearming themselves. The aggression from the recent past, which changed the ethnic structure of our country and culminated in genocide, was stopped by the cooperation of the Army of BiH and NATO, and that is the reason why we believe in lasting cooperation and the alliance," the SDA points out.

They add that such an alliance is not directed against anyone, except against potential attackers. Today, NATO has very good relations and frequent joint exercises with countries that were exposed to NATO strikes 26 years ago.

"We must overcome divisions and strive for lasting peace and cooperation. That is why we believe in your assessment that we all need a "qualitatively new system of collective security on the continent, which requires a united effort to combat new threats and risks." We see no reason why these united efforts should not go in the direction of Russia's cooperation with NATO members, and with all Balkan countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina," stated the SDA.
