Brkić: BiH ready to contribute to collective security and stability

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 25 (FENA) - Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Commission for Cooperation with NATO of Bosnia and Herzegovina Josip Brkić is on a two-day working visit to Brussels.

Brkić attended a meeting of the NATO Political Committee today, and held separate meetings with NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Bettina Cadenbach and Assistant Secretary General for Operations John Manza.

At the meeting of the NATO Political Committee, the Chairman of the Commission for Cooperation with NATO informed the representatives of the embassies of NATO member countries about the formation, holding of the first session and the work of the Commission, more precisely the way of voting and decision-making, goals, tasks and deadlines.

He thanked for the excellent cooperation of the NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo, the Embassy of Hungary, which is the contact NATO embassy for BiH and all partners from the Alliance.

"We are grateful to NATO for its open door policy, which is a tool for very fruitful cooperation and joint solution for security challenges and risks. This is the true value of our partnership, because no country is able to deal with so many challenges, especially at the same time, such as pandemics, natural disasters, organized crime, illegal migration or any other security challenge," said Brkić.

The diplomats welcomed the formation of the Commission, the progress made in cooperation with the Alliance, the participation of BiH in peacekeeping missions and expressed the expectation that our country will continue with the necessary reform processes.

At the meetings with the assistants of the Secretary General, Brkić informed them that the Decision of the Council of Ministers of BiH of February 24 established the Commission headed by him, as well as the inaugural meeting at which the Rules of Procedure were adopted, and the activities on drafting the Reform Program for 2021 document have been launched.

He added that the work of the Commission is transparent, and that the main topic of its work will be technical cooperation between BiH and NATO structures.

The consensus itself on cooperation with NATO clearly shows that reform processes are a priority for BiH, both for the country itself and for strengthening the rule of law and all other democratic principles, and that it is therefore important to use the ongoing momentum.

At a meeting with Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, Bettina Cadenbach, Brkić also stressed that the development of good neighborly relations and strengthening regional cooperation are priorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina's foreign policy, with the ultimate goal of BiH joining modern European, political, economic and security integration.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's contribution to NATO-led operations and other peacekeeping operations was the topic of the talks with Assistant Secretary General for Operations John Manza.

On that occasion, Chairman Brkić emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina supports, and is ready to contribute to collective security and stability, reduction of threats to peace, and that it is committed to cooperation and fundamental democratic values.

He stressed that the stability and security of Europe also lies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that since 2001, a total of 1,650 officers from Bosnia and Herzegovina have participated in various peace support operations, stated the Public Relations Office of the BiH MFA.
