HJPC leaders and European Commission officials on strengthening rule of law

SARAJEVO, March 26 (FENA) - Members of the Presidency of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJPCBiH) Halil Lagumdžija, Sanela Gorušanović-Butigan and Biljana Simeunović and Selim Karamehić held an online meeting with senior officials of the Directorate-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission (EC), Acting Director-General Maciej Popowski and Deputy Director for the Western Balkans Michela Mateulla and associates.

In his presentation, Director-General Popowski stated that the HJPC is an important partner of the European Commission and the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing the importance of the issue of the integrity of judicial office holders and the independence of the judicial system.

He also stressed the importance of the process of implementing the 14 priorities of the European Union so that Bosnia and Herzegovina can receive candidate status.

President Lagumdžija emphasized the need for strong support from the European Commission for the adoption of amendments to the Law on the HJPC BiH, emphasizing that the amendments to that law are extremely important and that their adoption will unlock many processes, enable thorough reforms and strengthen the rule of law.

Vice President Simeunović referred to the process of revision of the Law on the HJPC BiH and the activities undertaken in the previous period, while Vice President Gorušanović-Butigan spoke about the newly adopted Reform Program of the HJPC BiH and areas that should be reformed and improved.

Deputy Director Matuella said that the European Commission has been cooperating with the HJPC BiH for a long time, emphasizing the position and intention to continue this cooperation in the future.

She also referred to the Opinion of the Venice Commission (European Commission for Democracy through Law), believing that it represents a clear direction in which the amendments to the Law on the HJPC of BiH should move.

The participants in the meeting agreed that the common goal of the HJPC BiH and the European Commission is to strengthen the rule of law and, consequently, restore the trust of citizens in the judicial system, the HJPC BiH said.
