SARAJEVO, April 2 (FENA) - Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, Ambassador Sven Alkalaj, participated in a virtual dialogue with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, entitled "Building Back Better - The Road Ahead for the UN".
The dialogue was organized by the Forum of Small States (FOSS), an informal association of small states at the UN with more than 120 members.
The topic of discussion was the further work and progress of the United Nations, with special reference to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the dialogue, participants addressed many of the challenges facing the UN as well as multilateralism, especially in the areas of gender equality, human rights and UN and Security Council reforms.
Alkalaj pointed out that in the 75 years of its existence, the UN has proven that it can cope with preserving world peace and security, codifying international norms, protecting human rights, as well as providing assistance to countries to achieve sustainable development and help the most vulnerable.
“Also, the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the fragility of our world and it is a kind of test for the United Nations as a global organization and for international cooperation and multilateralism in general. It turned out that no country, no matter how well organized, rich and prosperous, can cope with this invisible enemy on its own,” said Alkalaj.
He stressed that it is crucial that member states continue to provide support and cooperation within the World Health Organization (WHO), as a key body for coordinating the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina fully supports UN efforts for peace and security in conflict situations and supported the call of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a general and immediate cessation of the conflict in order to stop violence and raise the voice for peace, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH announced.
