Out of a total of 16,660 police officers in BiH, only nine percent are women

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 5 (FENA) -  Center for Security Studies (CSS) in Sarajevo launched a campaign called "Women in Police" in February, within the project "Police and Respect for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina", funded by the European Union.

The campaign will last until August this year, with the aim of breaking the stereotype that the police are exclusively a male profession and that women are very capable of achieving a successful police career, despite all the challenges and problems they may face.

Although women are the majority of the population according to the 2013 census, discrimination is still present and their ability to participate in the public sphere is limited.

Out of a total of 16,660 police officers in BiH, only nine percent are women, although the BiH Law on Gender Equality states that equal representation exists only when one of the genders is represented by at least 40 percent.

The findings of the research showed that female police officers mostly have the lowest police ranks, with an evident underrepresentation of women in decision-making positions.

On the other hand, numerous studies, conducted around the world, have proven that women, with their qualities and skills, unquestionably contribute to the efficiency of policing.

Therefore, the campaign seeks to encourage girls and women in BiH to become more involved in the police sector, because police agencies must be a mirror of society.

The police must have all categories of the population in their ranks, in order to do their job as efficiently as possible, in accordance with the slogan of the campaign "For the police which represent the whole society!".

The project "Police and Respect for Human Rights in BiH" is funded by the European Union, and is jointly implemented by the Center for Security Studies Sarajevo, the association "Network of Female Police Officers" from Sarajevo, and the Geneva Center for Security Sector Management (DCAF).
