Special safeguards on meat imports from EU could jeopardize BiH's European path

FENA Aida Kovač

SARAJEVO, April 8 (FENA) - Proposal of decision on special safeguard measures on import of certain products originating from EU member states, proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, should be on the agenda of the session of the BiH Council of Ministers today.

At the beginning of February, the Council of Ministers of BiH, with seven votes in favor and three against, did not reach a consensus for making this decision, after two rounds of voting.

These are measures proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations on the import of fresh and chilled beef and pork from European Union countries, which relate to increasing the customs rate by 10 percent plus 2.5 KM per kilogram for beef and 10 percent plus 1.5 KM per kilogram for pork.

Members of the BiH Council of Ministers who oppose this decision as a reason why it should not be supported said that the decision is contrary to the Stabilization and Association Agreement as well as Article XIX GATT and the Decision on measures to protect domestic production from excessive imports.
