Džaferović: Initiatives on redrawing borders must be discarded at the outset

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 16 (FENA) - Following media reports in the Republic of Slovenia on the existence of a "non-paper" document on changing borders in the Western Balkans, the perception was created in the BiH public that some circles within the European Union are working to endanger Bosnia and Herzegovina's territorial integrity, it is stated in a letter that a member of the Presidency of BiH, Šefik Džaferović sent to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

"These events have led to serious destabilization and unrest in our country, given that secessionist political forces, which have threatened with the secession of the entity of Republika Srpska for a long time, publicly interpret these indications as proof of support within the European Union for their secessionist plans.

The European Union is one of the witnesses of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The basic provisions of this international agreement confirm the continuity of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the internationally recognized borders with which it became a member of the United Nations, and the secession of the Bosnian entities is strictly prohibited, says Džaferović.

He points out that the European Union, along with the United States, has been the main stabilizing factor in BiH for the past 25 years since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, thanks to whose positive influence numerous steps have been taken in post-war reconstruction and reform development.

"Having in mind the European experience in the first half of the 20th century, as well as earlier attempts of divisions of Bosnia and Herzegovina along ethnic lines during the aggression in the 1990s that culminated in the genocide in Srebrenica, any subsequent attempt to redraw borders would threaten peace in our country and the region.

This would certainly undermine the stability of Europe, based on the principle of immutability of borders. Given that these are very dangerous things, I felt the need to draw your attention to the fact that such initiatives should be discarded at the outset. Bosnia and Herzegovina expects more attention from the European Union on the credible perspective of Bosnia and Herzegovina's membership in the EU," wrote Džaferović in a letter to the President of the European Council.
