MOSTAR, April 26 (FENA) - As aprt of the Initiative for a Greener and Sustainable Future - GoGreen of the United Nations Development Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP BiH), the first ten of the thousand planned trees were planted at Fortica Hill on Monday near Mostar.
Mostar Mayor Mario Kordić said on the occasion that he was proud that Mostar was one of 18 local governments in BiH involved in the Via Dinarica project and the Initiative for a Greener and Sustainable Future.
"The idea is to plant a thousand trees during the year, and the initiative is of a larger scale because the goal in 2021 is to include 40 municipalities and plant 40,000 trees throughout BiH," said the Mayor of Mostar.
The campaign of planting trees gathered young people from other parts of BiH the "Green Network" project implemented by the Embassy of the Republic of Italy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"Environmental protection is important for a healthy society. By protecting the environment, we encourage people to behave more responsibly towards nature," said Italian Ambassador Nicola Minasi, whose embassy, together with USAID, is financing the Via Dinarica project.
The UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in BiH Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov added that this was just one of the initial activities that will take place during the year and that the projects aim to show the tourism potentials of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The GoGreen initiative brings together municipalities and cities that help plant trees to combat climate change.
In 2020, this Initiative in BiH brought together 15 municipalities and cities that have committed themselves to plant trees each year. As a result, 26 species and 9,500 trees have been planted at 125 locations, while this year, the target has been raised to 40,000 trees.
