WASHINGTON, April 27 (FENA) - The US State Department said on Monday night that there was a danger that "unfounded speculations about changing borders in the Western Balkans along ethnic lines could encourage instability in the region" and thus "evoke memories of tensions in the past," the Voice of America reports.

An unofficial diplomatic document, the so-called "non-paper", has been circulating among European officials for some time, proposing the partition of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the unification of Kosovo and Albania, Reuters quoted a spokeswoman for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as saying on Monday that the European Union was "absolutely against" redrawing borders in the Western Balkans.

"A stable, prosperous future for the Western Balkans must be based on good governance, the rule of law, multiethnic democracy and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms," the US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

He added that Washington supports the countries of the Western Balkans on the path "to European integration and membership in key European and Euro-Atlantic institutions".
