TABLA project and STEAM laboratory for creativity and innovation of students

FENA Darinka Mitrović

SARAJEVO, April 27 (FENA) - STEAM laboratories have been opened in 28 primary and secondary schools in the Sarajevo Canton, designed to stimulate students' potential and enable practical application and demonstration of knowledge and skills, and all with the aim of a more progressive way of working with students and achieving better results.

One of them was opened today in the Elementary School "Grbavica I" in Sarajevo. Equipping STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) laboratories in schools is part of the TABLA General Education Project implemented by Save the Children and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID BiH Mission Director Nancy J. Eslick stressed the importance of education for the United States, which is why they decided to support BiH and help develop this type of learning because only educated minds, as she pointed out, can later bring benefits and create new jobs.

“It is very important that children like school, that children are inspired by school, that they learn and progress and that this STEAM program contributes to the further development of young minds,” Eslick pointed out.

Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Edin Forto, pointed out the connection between this project and the former technical education in our region, when for generations it produced industrial giants that exported not only products but also knowledge around the world.

“We want to introduce this technical education or STEAM classrooms in schools and thus create conditions to become a society of knowledge and encourage growth of industries that have led us forward, such as IT industry and engineering,” said Forto.

Minister of Education of the SC Naida Hota Muminović said that equipping 28 STEAM laboratories is a good starting position for changing the paradigm of teaching and learning, and that a good environment educates and encourages.

Also, based on the expressed needs of educators, 70 laptops were donated to selected primary schools in the Sarajevo Canton in order to improve online teaching during the pandemic.

In addition to providing equipment for STEAM laboratories and donated laptops for local schools, the TABLA project launched 16-day trainings for TOT programs for 42 teachers from SC, which in turn will hold a four-day training for an additional 840 teachers in primary and secondary schools in the Sarajevo Canton.
