SARAJEVO, May 9 (FENA) - The Day of Victory over Fascism and Europe Day was celebrated this evening at the Sarajevo City Hall with a concert of the Sarajevo Philharmonic String Orchestra at which the Sarajevo Mayor Benjamina Karić and EU Special Representative in BiH Johann Sattler expressed their belief that with hard work and intelligence of young people could be a path to overcome this temporary stagnation in the overall development of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Karić is convinced that the generation to which she belongs will know how to valorize the positive achievements of the past, that they will be able to remove numerous obstacles that were sown by unkind people, people with narrow horizons and those who misappropriated our common property.

"I want to believe in our strength and ability to create new values, better economic foundations and a more secure future for every individual in our Sarajevo. All activities of the city administration, city council and the mayor will be directed towards that goal," said Karić.

She also pointed out that Sarajevo is proud of its anti-fascist past and that it will continue to nurture such values just like anti-fascist, democratic and liberal Europe.

"Sarajevo will remain an open city to all well-intended people; it will be a meeting place of worlds, cultures and religions, it will jealously preserve its plural expression and nurture traditional values. I want it to be as comfortable a place for all its inhabitants to live in as soon as possible, a city of prosperity to which new people come, bring their knowledge and capital. It is a city that I love and that I stand for. My wish, as the majority of my fellow citizens, is for Sarajevo to soon and formally become part of a united Europe. I am convinced that in the foreseeable future we can achieve that goal," said Karić.

She emphasizes that Sarajevo was and remains part of the anti-fascist forces of victory over the dark forces and that Sarajevo is a hero city inscribed on the pages of European and world history, and that our citizens share the civilizational values of democratic and progressive Europe, convinced that our future is in a united Europe.

The EU Special Representative to BiH, Ambassador Johann Sattler in his daily meetings with citizens, students, business people and workers, saw that there was a lot of will, among many people across Bosnia and Herzegovina to deal with the legacy of the past and moving forward. This is particularly true for younger people.

"Based on a recent survey, a great majority of youngsters deem that the best way to strengthen peacebuilding is to invest in education, job creation, culture, and connectivity. Close to 80% of youth believe that the EU accession process will accelerate this process. I fully agree with them," said Sattler.

Sattler underlined that citizens of this country do not want to be European just on Europe Day.

"Talking to so many of them from all corners of this country, one thing is clear: they crave CHANGE. They want their country to progress towards the EU. Not in twenty years, but now," said the Ambassador.

•He stressed that, for Bosnia and Herzegovina to advance towards the European Union − as aspired by the vast majority of its citizens and politicians from across the spectrum − it needs to tackle difficult, longstanding issues.

Two years since the European Commission published its Opinion on the country’s membership application, this list of issues that BiH needs to address remains lengthy. It includes much-needed reforms in the rule of law, in fighting corruption and in the functionality of the institutions.

•"Against this background, it is of utmost importance for all political leaders in the country to stop using divisive rhetoric and diverting attention from these much-needed reforms in the interest of its citizens seeking a better life," emphasized Sattler.

Divisive rhetoric will not create jobs, divisive rhetoric will not root out corruption, nor will it improve public services. It also runs contrary to the fundamental EU values, undermines stability and poisons the climate.

For as we have witnessed on the European continent after a centuries-long history of wars and hatred, the road to more stable, democratic and prosperous societies is hard work, it’s challenging, yet it is very much feasible.

•"In that spirit let me assure you of one thing - we will be with you on that road. We’ll continue to assist with medical equipment, with vaccines, with economic assistance. And together we will turn a page and come back soon to more normalcy. The European Union will be with you on that path towards our common future. Europe is already here. Now is the time for the EU," "said Ambassador Sattler at tonight's event in the City Hall, which was organized by the City of Sarajevo in order to mark Europe Day and Victory Day over Fascism.
