SARAJEVO, May 11 (FENA) - Chairperson of the Interdepartmental Working Group for Amendments to the Election Legislation in BiH Alma Čolo (SDA) stated today in Sarajevo that all citizens should have equal rights in the electoral system, have the right to be elected and the right to elect.
After the constituent session of the Interdepartmental Working Group, she told reporters that their mandate is to change the election legislation and that the decisions of both houses of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly do not state that they are authorized to work on changes to the BiH Constitution.
"But, if we are going to implement the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, the OSCE recommendations, of their ODIHR department, we must work on changes to the Constitution, so we must change the relevant provisions of the Constitution," said Čolo.
According to her, at today's session, some members of the Interdepartmental Working Group have already asked for its mandate to be extended and to ask the Parliament for that authority.
"However, in the end we came to the conclusion that during the work, when we encounter the need to change the relevant provisions of the Constitution, we will eventually ask both houses of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly to expand our mandate in that direction," said čolo.
She says that yesterday they received a letter from the US Embassy, the OSCE Mission and the European Union, in which they welcomed the work of the Interdepartmental Working Group, and expect the preparation of the changes to the election legislation by the end of the year, because, as she said, next year will be an election year and there will be no room for that.
She pointed out that they will try to do the job as soon as possible so that a result can be expected in the second half of the year if there is enough political will.
