FENA Press release

SARAJEVO/WASHINGTON, May 15 (FENA) - Deputy Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Chairman of the NATO Cooperation Commission Josip Brkić spoke by phone on Thursday with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer, who is also the US State Department's special envoy for Western Balkans, and Michael Murphy, Senior Advisor.

The talks focused on the current political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an emphasis on our country's NATO path and changes to the Election Law.

Brkić pointed out that BiH's progress on the Euro-Atlantic path contributes to the stability and progress not only of our country but also the entire region.

He informed his interlocutors about the importance of forming the Commission for Cooperation with NATO, and the manner and dynamics of the work of that body.

He expressed satisfaction that the Commission for Cooperation with NATO unanimously adopted the Draft Reform Program for 2021 last month, followed by further administrative procedures.

He added that he expects the document that defines the political and legal framework for cooperation between BiH and NATO to enter the final phase of adoption by the end of May.

Brkić emphasized that adopting amendments to the election legislation is a key political precondition, in accordance with the decisions and recommendations of the European Union institutions.

He informed the US officials about the establishment and work of the Interdepartmental Working Group to amend the BiH Election Law, and stressed the importance of this process, which will mark the European future and the reform path of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The US Deputy Assistant Secretaries of State Matthew Palmer and Senior Advisor Michael Murphy pointed out that the United States will continue to provide assistance and support to our country during the implementation of upcoming reforms.

They reiterated that the United States expects BiH to change electoral legislation, adopt limited constitutional changes to implement the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights and the BiH Constitutional Court, and pass reforms in the areas of justice and economy.

Finally, they stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to accelerate the dynamic of reforms this year in order to stabilize the political situation before the upcoming election year 2022, said the Public Relations Office of the BiH MFA.
