Center for the Environment - Initiative for the Protection of the Upper Neretva

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 2 (FENA) - The Center for the Environment in the entity of Republika Srpska has initiated proceedings to declare two protected areas on the Neretva River "Upper Neretva River, the Gacko Municipality" and "Natural trout breeding ground Ulog, the Kalinovik Municipality".

"In cooperation with experts, we plan to conduct field biological research and prepare a study for the proclamation of protection of this area. It is a natural habitat inhabited by a large number of rare, endemic and relict plant and animal species.

We expect that this initiative will be accepted by the Ministry and that the importance for the preservation of this valuable area would be recognized," said the vice president of the Center for the Environment, Jelena Ivanić.

The launch of initiatives like this one is one of the steps to save and preserve the Neretva River, where seven small hydropower plants are planned in two phases of the "Upper Neretva" Hydropower System (HES) project.

The construction of this energy system would practically mean that seven hydropower power plants in a row would continue on each other on the territory of a total of 30 kilometers of the upper course of the Neretva River. If these plans are realized, the Upper Neretva will be completely transformed from a river into a series of reservoirs and pipelines, which will have a huge impact on biodiversity and many rare, endemic and relict species will disappear.
