UNESCO seeks response from BiH institutions regarding 'Buk Bijela' project

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 3 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković received a letter through the BiH Permanent Mission to UNESCO regarding the announced project of construction of the Buk Bijela Hydropower Plant on the Drina River.

The Director of the UNESCO Center for Cultural Heritage, Mechtild Rössler, sent a request to BiH institutions regarding the information on laying the foundation stone for the construction of a dam on the Drina River downstream of the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro, in which she requested a response from the BiH institutions.

The letter also warns of Bosnia and Herzegovina's obligation to respect the international convention and not to take any measures that could endanger the cultural or natural heritage in the countries, signatories to the convention.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina will take measures within its competence and inform other competent institutions with the request of UNESCO. Bosnia and Herzegovina must respect international obligations and this is another indicator that such projects cannot be realized without the consent of state institutions," said Minister Turković.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH sent a note to the Republic of Serbia, whose company is the investor in the announced project together with the company owned by one of the entities in BiH.

A process has been initiated before the Constitutional Court of BiH in connection with this case, and earlier decisions of the highest judicial authority in BiH, clearly state that the disposal of water potentials of the Drina River, until the adoption of the law on state property, remains exclusively the competence of the state level, stated the MFA BiH.
