SARAJEVO, June 6 (FENA) - According to official data on the number of people infected with coronavirus per million inhabitants, as of June 5, 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina is ranked 55th in the world, behind all countries in the region and most countries of the European Union.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, 62,633 people per million inhabitants are infected with the coronavirus. Serbia ranks 28th with 81,974 cases per million inhabitants, Croatia 21st with 87,561 cases, Slovenia eighth with 122,748 cases, Northern Macedonia 38th with 74,597 cases, and Montenegro second with 158,867 cases per million citizens.

By comparison, coronavirus has spread much faster in countries such as the Czech Republic, Sweden, the United States (USA), the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Portugal, Hungary, Switzerland, Spain, Austria and Italy.

Unlike these statistics, which support the quality of measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus, statistics on the number of deaths per million inhabitants place Bosnia and Herzegovina at the very top of the world list.

Compared to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where 2,874 people per million people died as a result of the coronavirus, only Peru is worse with 5,564 deaths per million inhabitants and Hungary with 3,096 cases per million inhabitants. High mortality has also been recorded in countries such as the Czech Republic, Northern Macedonia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Slovakia, Brazil, Belgium, Slovenia and Italy, where more than 2,000 deaths per million inhabitants have been registered.

The negative statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the high position on the list of countries with the highest mortality per million inhabitants are mostly a consequence of mortality in the entity of Republika Srpska.

From the beginning of the pandemic until June 5, 2021, 64,174 people infected with the coronavirus and 3,723 deaths caused by the virus were registered in that entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 133,531 infected persons and 5,345 deaths were registered in the same period.

In practice, this means that 0.3 percent of the total population in the Republika Srpska entity has died, i.e. one in 17 infected people. On the other hand, in the Federation of BiH, 0.24 percent of the total population died, i.e. one of the 25 infected persons.

Observed by cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the highest mortality is in Zenica-Doboj, Central Bosnia and Posavina Canton, and the lowest in Herzegovina-Neretva, West Herzegovina Canton and Sarajevo Canton.
