Today, The Hague Tribunal pronounces the final verdict against Ratko Mladić

SARAJEVO, June 8 (FENA) - The final verdict against Ratko Mladić, former commander of the Republika Srpska Army's (VRS) General Staff, who is charged with the most serious war crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995), including genocide, will be pronounced today, after him being sentenced in the first instance to life imprisonment.

The second and final verdict will be handed down by the Appeals Chamber judges Prisca Matimba Nyambe, Aminatta Lois Runeni N’gum, Seymour Panton, Elizabeth Ibanda-Nahamya and newly appointed Judge Mustapha El Baaj, as announced by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

The indictment of the Hague Prosecution of Ratko Mladić as one of the key actors of joint criminal enterprises (JCE) in BiH, among other things, charges with the intention of permanent removal/persecution of Bosniaks, Bosnian Croats and other non-Serbs from large parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In addition to genocide, the most wanted Hague indictee is also accused of persecution on political and religious grounds, extermination and murder, deportation, inhumane acts, attacks on the civilian population and terrorizingthem, as well as taking UN members hostage in May and June 1995. 

The Hague Tribunal (ICTY) found Mladić guilty in the first instance verdict of violating the provisions of international humanitarian law, as well as violating the laws and customs of war.

The first-instance verdict of November 22, 2017, sentenced Ratko Mladić to life in prison for ten of the eleven counts of the indictment for genocide (one count each), crimes against humanity (five counts each) and war crimes (four counts each), but not for the genocide in six BiH municipalities during 1992 - Prijedor, Sanski Most, Ključ, Kotor Varoš, Foča and Vlasenica.

After spending almost 16 years on the run, he was arrested in Serbia on May 26, 2011, and transferred to the ICTY, a detention unit in Scheveningen on May 31, 2011.
