Izetbegović in Aghdam: BiH and Azerbaijan share many things in common

FENA Press release

AGHDAM, June 9 (FENA) - Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegović is paying an official visit to Azerbaijan, during which he visited Aghdam, a city liberated in October last year after decades of Armenian occupation.

After the visit, Izetbegović commented that more than 40,000 Azerbaijanis lived in that city until 1993, and that there is nothing there today.

"The goal of those who took the city in 1993 was to destroy life, to destroy Aghdam, to destroy the future of this place. They even dug up the defenders who were buried there. Their bones were thrown out. The only thing left, surprisingly, are the two minarets of the mosque," said Izetbegović.

He assessed that there are numerous connections between Agdham and Bosnia and Herzegovina, such as graves that were unearthed and deliberate destruction and devastation of opportunities for a normal life.

"Then we found old excavations of their medieval tombstones, resembling our 'stećak', on which we find a characteristic extended palm that we see on Bosnian 'stećak' tombstones," said Izetbegović.

He reminded that Bosnia and Herzegovina and Azerbaijan share many things in common, such as history, culture and challenges that both countries faced, but also views on the future.

The city of Aghdam was under Armenian control from 1993 to the fall of 2020 and was completely devastated during that period. The scale of the devastation is best illustrated by the descriptions of that city, which the media call the "Hiroshima of the Caucasus" and the "Ghost Town".
