Rifatbegović: There is no modern medicine without transplantation

SARAJEVO, June 13 (FENA) - Transplantation is very important in medicine because if we have this segment we can say that we also have modern medicine. There is no modern medicine without a standardized transplant program, said in an interview with FENA Prof. Dr. Zijah Rifatbegović from the University Clinical Center Tuzla.

As he said, he believes that Bosnia and Herzegovina, with its capacities, despite all the difficulties and the constant beginnings that have been going on since 2006, and 1999, when the first kidney transplant was performed, will have a better atmosphere in the future when it comes to this problem.

He says that the book he wrote "Donor and multivisceral organ explantation" was written precisely for the promotion of this field of medicine, with the goal of reducing the waiting lists of patients, especially patients waiting for a liver or kidney transplant.

Since transplantation is one of the most humane acts that can be interpreted at the level of not only expertise and science but also openness and humanity, this speaks in favor of the need to standardize this segment of medicine and bring BiH closer to the Eurotransplant program.

The book is designed to help doctors, students, volunteers who want to participate in the program of popularization of transplantation and organ donation, specialists, subspecialists and those who deal with transplantation so that they can exploit useful information and highlight surgical procedures that are important in organ explantation.

Prof. Dr. Zijah Rifatbegović stated that 22 liver transplants have been performed so far, and about 250 kidney transplants, and although that is not much, he believes that the transplantation program will be standardized in BiH in the future.

"I do not blame anyone from the health administration in terms of popularizing the way and quality of life after transplant procedures, but everyone should work much more in that field. The media can also do more to make citizens' consciousness more developed when we say that a healthy organ should not be buried," he explained.

There was a situation when people had signed donor cards, but the family did not agree to donate organs, which is why we lost at least twenty organs, and Rifatbegović says that he is aware of four such cases that happened recently.

On the other hand, the Law on Transplantation in BiH is good and is harmonized with the most modern laws in the European Union. the BiH law is harmonized according to the Spanish model according to which transplantation has become widespread as one of the best methods of treatment in the terminal phase of the disease.

Rifatbegović also stated that Croatia is the first in the world per million inhabitants when it comes to liver transplants, while Slovenia is the second in the world in terms of the number of heart transplants per million inhabitants, which shows that BiH neighbors have greater awareness on why it is necessary to donate a healthy organ.

When it comes to other countries in the region, the situation is similar to that in BiH. Serbia, as the most populous country in the region, cannot boast of the number of transplants. Montenegro and Kosovo have not yet standardized their transplant programs, nor has North Macedonia, but a heart transplant has been performed in the country, which is not yet the case in BiH.

Taking all this into account, BiH is somewhere in the middle in the region, but Professor Rifatbegović emphasizes that this is far from something to be praised, and points out the need to improve the transplant program, which should be a priority.

BiH has human resources but lacks coordination among clinical centers, cantonal hospitals, and inter-entity health facilities to detect a donor in a timely manner.
