UDIK - Anniversary of crime against civilians in Višegrad

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 14 (FENA) - On this day 29 years ago, a war crime took place against civilians in Pionirska Street in Višegrad, said the Association for Social Research and Communication (UDIK).

The crime known as the “Living Bonfire” took place on June 14, 1992, when members of the “Avengers” paramilitary formation, led by Milan and Sredoje Lukić, forced more than 70 Bosniak civilians, mostly women and children and the elderly and burned alive in a deliberately instigated fire in Adem Omeragić's house in Pionirska Street in Višegrad. A grenade was thrown at the house, and then the soldiers shot at those who tried to escape by fleeing through the window. Most of the victims were from the village of Koritnik, where they were picked up and ordered to board buses, which were supposed to take them to Kladanj to a free territory. The youngest victim was only two days old.

A similar scenario, UDIK stated, happened on June 27, when 70 Bosniak civilians were set on fire in the house of Meho Aljić, in the settlement of Bikavac in Višegrad. Zehra Turjačanin testified before the ICTY about the horrors at Bikavac. Civilians were burned at a dozen other locations.

Milan Lukić was sentenced to life in prison and Sredoje Lukić to 27 years in prison for crimes in Višegrad before the ICTY. The Hague tribunal has determined that Visegrad was subjected to one of the most monstrous campaigns of ethnic cleansing during the war against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The crimes in Višegrad were also tried before the courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UDIK announced.
