Izetbegović: The boycott of general elections is unrealistic

SARAJEVO, June 23 (FENA) - President of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Bakir Izetbegović said today before the session of the party's Main Board that he would, among other things, discuss Republika Srpska's request to discuss the future of BiH at the entity level.

“That established negotiating team is reduced to two parties. That is ten parliamentarians out of 42 in the state parliament,” said Izetbegović.

He added that he would discuss a number of topics at the session today, such as the pandemic, the migrant crisis, relations in BiH and the region, the "flourishing" of Serbian nationalism, relations with the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ), changes to the Election Law and the SDA.

Asked whether he plans to continue negotiations with HDZ President Dragan Čović on changing the Election Law, Izetbegović said that he plans to talk to him, but also to Nermin Nikšić (SDP), Željko Komšić (DF), Fahrudin Radončić (SBB), Milorad Dodik (SNSD), Mirko Šarović (SDS) and everyone who has representatives in BiH Parliamentary Assembly.

“A month ago, I was optimistic when I heard in a conversation with Čović that they are ready to reduce the function of the House of Peoples to protect the vital national interest. This is crucial for us, because this situation we have now is stifling democracy in BiH and the existence of multiethnic parties that correspond to the multiethnic substance of BiH. The SDA will not give up its request, but Čović gave up and the negotiations collapsed,” said Izetbegović.

He considers it unrealistic to boycott next year's general elections, pointing out that these are all pressures.

Asked whether Jasmina Biščević-Tokić would be appointed as president of the SDA Main Board at the session, Izetbegović said that he would vote for her and expressed hope that she would accept it.

Commenting on the statement of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, that it is not clear to him how Albanians have the possibility of independence, and the Republika Srpska does not, Izetbegović said that Vučić knows the answer to that question very well.

“I recommend him to read what the expert Kasim Trnka said, and that is that international law recognizes the right to self-determination of the peoples who were oppressed, and 860,000 Albanians were expelled in Kosovo. The state of Serbia has proved that it has no right to rule over Kosovo,” he pointed out.

He added that Kosovo was also an autonomous region, and that RS is an entity that exists thanks to the Constitution, which can be changed tomorrow.

He expects Serbia to finally face what they have done, and told them not to pursue a policy based on something that is most painful, and that is the genocide in Srebrenica and the killing of people.
