Nelson: The reform of the Election Law is possible this year

FENA

MOSTAR, June 28 (FENA) - This year, 2021, is a non-election year, the one when it is possible to reform the Election Law. It is necessary to stop wasting time, so when the time comes for the 2022 elections, all citizens can equally participate in the elections and know that their vote is important and that it counts, said US Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson in an interview with 'Večernji list'.

He expressed regret that the working group for the reform of the Election Law had not been established earlier, but that some progress had been made and that the process needed to be accelerated.

When it comes to the influence of other major powers in BiH and the region, Nelson says there is a clear difference between the goals of Russia and China and the goals of Euro-Atlantic partners, noting that Russia promotes divisions across the region.

“What we see is that they do not advocate a more stable and self-sustainable BiH. Also, corruption in this country is not a problem for Russia and China. It is very clear to the United States that corruption undermines democracy and business in this country and contributes to the insecurity that drives many young talented people to leave this country. For the United States, which shares the same values as your country, we believe that your future lies within the Euro-Atlantic community, as a democratic and sovereign country whose territorial integrity is not in question. We share the same values,” Nelson said.

Asked about the possibility of President Joe Biden's visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the US Ambassador replied that such a thing "should be deserved".

“I am sure that President Biden would like to come, and that could depend, among other things, on how much progress will be made here and deserve a visit. Also, we would be glad if one of the other high American officials came to BiH. And even in Mostar. As you know, we are working on the very important project in Mostar, that is, the attempt to revive and unite the old Music School. We need some good results and good stories to be able to persuade senior US officials to come to Bosnia and Herzegovina. And you know how much we are trying to make it happen,” said Nelson in an interview with 'Večernji list BiH'.
