SARAJEVO, July 4 (FENA) - The Embassy of the United States of America in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday evening organized a celebration of the 245th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America via its Facebook page.

In his address, US Ambassador Eric Nelson pointed out that today's holiday is an opportunity to celebrate 25 years of partnership between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina and added that this year marks an important moment in relations between the two countries - 25 years since the Agency for USAID has begun providing assistance to BiH.

He recalled that in the first years after the war, that aid was aimed at rebuilding the country and restarting the economy. Nelson emphasized that they have been investing in the institutions and trainings for the citizens of this country for 25 years, who strive for a prosperous and democratic future based on the rule of law.

"While we are celebrating this anniversary of USAID, we promote the heroes of BiH every week through social networks. These heroes are citizens who used the training and assistance of USAID to build a stronger, more prosperous democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina," underlined Ambassador Nelson.

He added that their stories of hard-earned results in the fields of human rights, justice, peace and trust, entrepreneurship and job creation, education and other are reminiscent of the progress that has been made.

"Their stories are the embodiment of this country's ability to reach the standards that apply in the Euro-Atlantic community. Through our assistance, we continue to invest in future generations,” said Nelson.

He stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina needs leaders to build trust and who need a stronghold.

"A true stronghold for the future should include electoral reform before next year's elections, as well as reforms that will attract foreign investments and help legitimate businesses to create jobs, progress in implementing reforms that will bring BiH closer to EU membership, and above all, a common fight against corruption," said the US Ambassador.

He recalled President Joe Biden's recent words: "Corruption erodes the foundations of society", and pointed out that it makes the authorities less efficient, wastes public resources and creates inequality when it comes to access to services, which makes it difficult for families to take care for their loved ones.

Speaking about the election process, Ambassador Nelson said that corrupt actors who exploit the election system and manipulate it for their own benefit rob citizens of the right to elect their own leaders and call those same leaders to be accountable.

"Reforms that would address these issues would encourage economic growth in BiH, eliminate discrimination and misuse of the electoral process, begin restoring trust in judicial institutions, are all at hand this year. The United States will remain an unwavering partner to leaders and citizens who are ready to tackle such problems and direct this country forward," concluded the US Ambassador Eric Nelson.
