Čolak: We have to ensure legitimate representation in the Presidency and HoPs

SARAJEVO, July 5 (FENA) - Deputy Chair of the Interdepartmental Working Group for Amendments to the BiH Election Legislation Bariša Čolak met today with the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Palmer and Executive Director for Western Europe, Western Balkans, Turkey and the United Kingdom in the European External Action Service (EEAS) Angelina Eichhorst and after a meeting said he was encouraged and that the positions of both the US and the EU were going in the same direction.

"The common position is to encourage us, to speed up these talks, to reach a solution in the BiH Election Law as soon as possible, considering the limitations in the Constitution itself. We have heard that the most important thing is to eliminate all forms of discrimination that have been determined by the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, but also by the Constitutional Court of BiH," stated Čolak.

It is necessary, he added, to eliminate discrimination against those who do not declare themselves as members of one of the constituent peoples, but equally to eliminate discrimination against one entire constituent people.

He stated that a non-election year is an opportunity and that he believes that the talks would intensify and that he hopes that they could reach, first of all, a political agreement this month.

According to him, it is not possible to expect the Working Group to resolve these political issues on its own "although we are also politicians who are, at least for the most part, part of this interdepartmental working group."

"If BiH does not do that in this non-election year, then there may be delays and consequences," said Čolak.

Answering the question on what he thinks about the asymmetric model of electing members of the Presidency, Čolak said that every model suits the HDZ, be it direct, be indirect, be symmetrical, or asymmetrical.

"What is important is to have a legitimate election of members of the Presidency of BiH, i.e. that Croats, as the smallest people, have the opportunity to elect their member of the Presidency of BiH as Bosniaks and Serbs do. That is the most important thing. Which model will be applied is less important," believes Čolak.
