SARAJEVO, July 6 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina Staša Košarac talked today via video link with Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala about BiH's admission to this extremely important world association.
Minister Košarac stressed that full membership in the WTO is a clear goal of BiH, and an absolute priority of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH in the current mandate because it brings many benefits for the domestic economy, primarily in terms of easier access to foreign markets on equal terms.
Košarac informed his interlocutor about the steps that the Ministry has taken in the past year and a half when it comes to fulfilling the conditions for joining that world association, and the question of the right to trade remains open, which needs to be agreed with the United States.
So far, BiH has concluded bilateral negotiations and signed protocols with 17 member countries of the World Trade Organization, and the issue of harmonization of certain elements of bilateral negotiations with the Russian Federation remains open.
Director-General Iweala said that the World Trade Organization estimates that it would be desirable for BiH to adopt a decision on the quality of petroleum liquid fuels by the end of August, and to complete bilateral negotiations with the Russian Federation by the end of October, so that BiH could become a member of the WTO at the General Assembly of this organization on November 30 in Geneva.
The position of the WTO Secretariat is that BiH is currently ahead of other countries in the process of joining the organization, and Iweala has expressed full support in achieving the goal, announced the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH.
