Džaferović:Fewer and fewer living witnesses to genocide, but memory is not fading

SARAJEVO, July 10 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović said that the Potočari Memorial Center has a key role in preserving the memory of the victims of Srebrenica genocide, and that "the wounds are still open, even though 26 years have passed".

“Tomorrow we will mark another sad anniversary, and the wounds are still open. There are fewer and fewer living witnesses, so it is very important to preserve the memory. Sometimes one gets the impression that time does not pass, that the pain remains the same, the memory does not fade. Still, time passes relentlessly. There are fewer and fewer living witnesses to the genocide every year, and the memory is not fading. That is why it is of great importance to preserve that memory so that the new generations know what happened and draw important lessons for the future from that,” Džaferović said today in Potočari.

He emphasizes that the Memorial Center Potočari will be even more important when there will be no more collective funerals of genocide victims, when all attention will be focused on its contents, and that the memory of genocide, in addition to the Center, has institutions that deal with it, and there are more and more of them.

“That is why it is essential to provide the necessary support to the Potočari Memorial Center, and I will strive for the government to continue with this practice. The state of BiH will always stand behind the Memorial Center. The Centre's biggest foreign donor is Turkey, while BiH cannot support the Centre's work even more because of the burden of the country's Dayton structure, which is best illustrated by the fact that the Council of Ministers did not declare July 11 a day of mourning in BiH, because the ministers from the Republika Srpska entity opposed it,” said a member of the Presidency of BiH.

Džaferović spoke today in Potočari during the presentation of the roof renovation project and the conceptual design of the Museum, which was supported by the Turkish TIKA.
