Agius: The genocide in Srebrenica was confirmed by 34 judges from 29 countries

POTOČARI, July 11 (FENA) - I am shocked by the endless denial of crimes because it is a rejection of what the victims survived, and those facts are closest to the scientifically established knowledge, painstakingly considered and rigorously confirmed in numerous proceedings, said today the President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) Carmel Agius.

Addressing those gathered at the commemoration to mark the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, he stressed that the coronavirus pandemic once again showed how important it is that the truth was established on scientific facts, as was done in the case of the Srebrenica genocide.

"The fight for the truth is essential. Everyone has experienced disappointment and frustration seeing human susceptibility to manipulation being ruthlessly exploited by those who deny the truth in achieving their personal political goals. For two decades, the denial of genocide has become a favorite means of those so that the people of this country can continue to be divided," Agius added.

He noted that division is what has brought so much suffering to many lives and that he is shaken by the denial of the crime, but says time will not change the scientifically established facts.

"No conflict has been better documented than the break-up of Yugoslavia. The truth about this is based on thousands of testimonies of survivors and other witnesses to ensure that everything is corroborated by evidence. Every conclusion was made beyond a reasonable doubt and was made by experienced lawyers from all over the world" he pointed out.

Speaking about the final verdict against the former commander of the Army of the Republic of Srpska, Ratko Mladić, he mentioned that, by ending that case, the genocide in Srebrenica was confirmed by 34 judges from 29 countries from five continents. This was confirmed by the unequivocal conclusion reached in 12 precise judgments.

"In this context, it is quite obvious how dishonorable and shameless it is to continue to undermine the painful truth. It is a denial of science, and this malicious tactic serves as complete deception and you should not be deceived by those who say that by taking responsibility, that responsibility is transferred to one community. That responsibility is on the shoulders of the perpetrators and those who encouraged and led them, we know their names and it is our duty to remember that and ensure that it never happens again," Agius concluded.
